The Pro Carton Young Designers Award honors emerging talent in the field of packaging design. This prize was awarded for the sixth time in collaboration with the German Fachverband Faltschachtel-Industrie e.V. (FFI) for Germany. The high response underlines its relevance in Europe for creative and innovative packaging concepts based on folding box board.

The design idea “SandKit” by the student team Maria Paula Monroy Vargas, Sarah Drauschke and Margo Rindle impressed the jury so much that the submission won both the European Creative Cartonboard Ideas Award All Other and the German Pro Carton Young Designers Award 2023. The paper-based packaging developed in the “Packaging Design” seminar at the Design Department of the Münster University of Applied Sciences, the Münster School of Design (MSD), offers an intelligent and sustainable solution in the area of DIY supplies. Sandpaper may be an essential tool for DIY projects and home repairs, but storing and using it can often be a hassle. This is exactly where SandKit comes in, because thanks to the intelligent packaging design, the laborious handling of sandpaper is a thing of the past. The innovative packaging concept not only functions as a dispenser for sandpaper, but is also a practical sanding block. The color system of the folding box provides information about the grain size of the sandpaper it contains, making it easy to select the right abrasive. Additionally, the cut-out window allows potential buyers to physically feel the sandpaper and its texture before purchasing.

Another notable feature of the SandKit design is the clever hanging device. Thanks to this innovation, the packaging can be hung conveniently and in a space-saving manner, making both storage and access to the product even more convenient. SandKit is characterized not only by its user-friendliness and practicality, but also by its sustainability. As a paper-based packaging solution, it eliminates the need for other grinding tools and therefore contributes significantly to waste reduction.

The award ceremony took place on October 24th, 2023 in Bad Vilbel as part of the FFI Technology Forum.
